Yorro Njie, secretary general of The Gambia Swimming and Aquatic Sports Association and the GNOC, is currently participating in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, the 20th edition from 14 to 30 July 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan, as one of only three African referees or International Technical Officers (ITO) selected to officiate at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka.

Three Gambian swimmers will represent The Gambia at this year's World Aquatics Championships 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan. This is the first time since the inception of the association that more than one athlete will represent the nation at the World Aquatics Championships (formerly FINA World Championships). This will also be the first time since the inception of the association that a female athlete will participate in the Championships.
