Gambia Aquatics delivered a strong showing at the Africa Aquatics Zone II Swimming Championships 2026, held from 28-30 August 2026 in Dakar, Senegal, with the national team setting four Gambian national records during the three-day competition.
The Gambia was represented by six swimmers, five male and one female, comprising two juniors and four seniors. The team included Ousman Jobe, Jegan Y. Jobe, Matarr Y. Jobe, Yankuba Jahateh, Sheikh Omar Ndongo and Fatou D. Sabally.
A major highlight was the establishment of four national records. Ousman Jobe clocked 33.08 seconds in the men's 50m backstroke, while 15-year-old Fatou D. Sabally set a women's 100m freestyle national record of 1:47.09.
The men's relay team also entered the national record books, recording 5:04.77 in the 4x100m freestyle relay and 5:56.92 in the 4x100m medley relay. The medley relay team finished fourth overall.
Several members of the team also achieved new personal bests, making Dakar 2026 another important competition in the continued development of Gambian swimming. The participation of 15-year-old juniors Fatou D. Sabally and Sheikh Omar Ndongo alongside senior national swimmers was particularly encouraging for the country's athlete development pathway.
